Grafton Recreation Junior Lifeguard Program

The Grafton Recreation Junior Lifeguard Program is an immersive experience for kids, ages 7 - 14, who want to master water-safety skills, build lasting confidence, and get a behind-the-scenes look at how our Silver Lake lifeguards keep the community safe every day.
Program Highlights
- Master the Essentials: Learn real-life lifesaving skills and water safety techniques.
- Professional Mentorship: Shadow our veteran lifeguard team during active shifts.
- Personal Growth: Build teamwork, leadership skills, and physical endurance.
- Junior Guard Gear: All participants receive a rescue mask and an official Junior Lifeguard T-shirt!
Note: All participants must pass a swim test prior to the start of the program. Tests can be completed at the beach during operating hours in the days leading up to the session.
Program Itinerary
- Day 1: Fitness & Endurance Kick off the session with open-water swimming, beach running, and water confidence drills designed to build stamina.
- Day 2: Lifesaving Fundamentals An introduction to First Aid, CPR, water rescue entries, and injury prevention. We’ll also cover the importance of guest relations and public communication.
- Day 3: Water Awareness Learn the "Science of the Beach." Topics include understanding surveillance zones, enforcing beach rules, local wildlife education, and emergency gear locations.
- Day 4: Lifeguard for a Day Put your skills into practice! Shadow the team, assist with beach setup and breakdown, and learn professional radio protocol using our walkie-talkies.
- Day 5: Training Wrap-Up & Beach Games Celebrate a week of hard work with bodyboarding, paddling, and team-building beach games.
